2009-2019, CACCIARI AT VILLA DELLA TORRE
for the 10th Anniversary celebrations

2009/2019: it is now 10 years since Villa Della Torre, the Mannerist masterpiece designed by Giulio Romano and Michele Sanmicheli, was restored to its former glory. This came about thanks to the acquisition of the site by Marilisa Allegrini who, realizing her life-long dream, was finally able to create a unified whole with Palazzo della Torre, one of the most historic and iconic vineyards in the entire Valpolicella Classica. To celebrate the Villa's 10th anniversary with the gravitas it deserves, a number of important and interesting cultural events will be organized during the current year, starting with the first event, a conversation with Massimo Cacciari on 'Noah and Dionysus: the origin of wine' (English translation of the title). The second age of the world, in the medieval interpretive tradition, begins with the end of the flood, when Noah, having emerged from the ark, plants the vine, produces wine and becomes intoxicated. Not therefore, as the pagans posited, with Bacchus as the god of wines, but Noah the man who, with the ark - built according to the prescriptions of Yahweh - saved all living species and, with them, his family and the whole of humanity. All these and other considerations are collected together in the 'Encomio del Vino', a learned essay in praise of the Byzantine philosopher Michele Psello, written around 1042 and now translated and published, for the first time in Italian, by Lucio Coco, with commentary by the late Tullio Gregory in the Sunday edition of Sole 24 Ore. In short, this important booklet contains contributions by pagan, Jewish and Christian authors, all of whom agree in celebrating wine, its dignity and its divine origins: parallels are drawn between Dionysus and Noah, Ecclesiastes and Homer, Moses and Plato, and St. Paul and Aristotle, to emphasize the homogeneity and continuity of the Mediterranean tradition in exalting wine as a source of health and joyfulness, a gift from Dionysus and Yahweh.
